Care vs. Urgent Care vs. the ER: Where Should You Go?

When you feel unwell or get hurt, it isn’t always clear where to go. Choosing the right place can save you time and money, and in some cases it can save your life. Here is a simple guide.

Go to the ER or call 911 for emergencies

Emergency rooms are for life-threatening situations. Call 911 or go to the nearest ER if you have:

  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Trouble breathing
  • Signs of a stroke, such as face drooping, arm weakness or trouble speaking
  • Severe bleeding or a serious head injury
  • Sudden, severe pain
  • Thoughts of harming yourself. You can also call or text 988.

Urgent care is for problems that can’t wait but aren’t emergencies

Urgent care centers can help with minor injuries and illnesses, especially when your doctor’s office is closed. Examples include sprains, minor cuts, and mild flu-like symptoms.

Primary care is for your ongoing health

Your primary care doctor is the best place for most of your health needs, including:

  • Prevention. Yearly checkups, screenings and vaccines
  • Ongoing conditions. Diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, thyroid problems and more
  • New concerns. Symptoms that are bothering you but aren’t an emergency
  • Medication reviews and refills
  • Follow-up care after a hospital or urgent care visit
  • Mental wellness. Stress, anxiety and mood concerns

Why having a regular doctor makes a difference

A doctor who knows your history can spot changes sooner, avoid repeated tests and keep your care consistent. Urgent care and ER visits treat the problem in front of them. Primary care looks at the whole picture over time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use urgent care instead of a primary care doctor?

Urgent care is useful for one-time problems, but it doesn’t replace a doctor who knows your history and follows your health over time.

What if I’m not sure whether it’s an emergency?

If you think it could be life-threatening, call 911. When in doubt, it is safer to get emergency help.
